Free Floating Hostility: How ArenaNet killed the dailies for me

So here's my first shot at a column. I called it "Free Floating Hostility" because I'm going to write a piece every time something i get really pissed of at something game-related. Topic for today is Guild Wars 2 and the way daily achievements work in this MMO. I recently came back to the game after six months break and discovered some bizarre changes to few of the core mechanics. What I like the least is new way dailies are completed. While playing the game one thing boggled my mind...

WHO ASKED FOR THIS?!

It used to be very different. Before they were changed you could complete most of the dailies WHILE doing something else. Also there were more of them to choose from. Now after doing first What we have now is a list of achievements that are:

  • class restricted (pvp),
  • level restricted (event, vista and gathering achievements),
  • zone or region restricted (again event, vista and gathering achievements),
  • resource restricted (gathering achievements).

Good aspect of the new dailies is that compared with previous version grind seems to be greatly reduced. Now they require doing "less stuff" than before (finish 4 events instead of 10 etc.). ArenaNet removed some of the most tedious ones (good bye aquatic slayer).

WvW seems to be area least affected by the changes. You won't have much problems completing most of these dailies while doing anything in WvW. The biggest problem are achievements that require you to complete events in certain maps. All you need is to finish 4 events in a specified zone. Unfortunately this is easier said than done if dozens of other players are zerging through map completing every event they stumble upon before you can even get there. This system creates unnecessary tension between people. It also shows how poorly some of the GW2 zones are prepared to handle large groups of players.

In essence ArenaNet with latest modification of dailies greatly reduced the grind but threw away only thing that made them better than in mos other MMOs: convenience.
